Organ-ism is a collection of scripts and algorithms that attempt to
explore ideas on data visualizations. This project originated on
experimentation with the php image manipulation kit and MySQL database
and the Internet as a platform for aesthetic, algorithmic and
perceptual experience. As the name “organ-ism” implies this project is
an visual instrument and tool. The visualization establishes an
abstract metaphor; that of an “object” that reacts to the changes of
temperature, humidity, wind and other climatic properties in order to
visualize the weather. Therefore, it creates images−the psyche of the
“organism−by collecting weather data such as temperature, humidity,
wind speed, etc., and algorithmically associating them to the
properties of a fantastic organism. In detail, the shape size of the
“worm” refers to the current temperature; so when the temperature at
the referred location is high the organism expands. Respectively, when
the temperature is low the organism contracts. The visualization
acquires a new set of data every 2 hours and has so far collected data
since the 25th of January 2007.
Organism died on November 28, 2008, 23:31 EST .
